In recent years, the conversation around sustainability has gained momentum, and nowhere is this more evident than in Dubai’s ambitious initiatives led by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). From February 2023 to February 2025, DEWA has organized ten impactful events aimed at enhancing the region’s natural beauty and ecological health. Their collaboration with the Emirates Marine Environmental Group has resulted in the planting of an impressive 13,350 mangrove trees at the Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary.
One of the standout features of these events is the community involvement. More than 1,650 volunteers — including DEWA employees, their families, and students from DEWA Academy — collectively dedicated 3,626 hours to this noble cause. It’s heartwarming to see so many people coming together to contribute to a sustainable future, and their happiness scores show just how meaningful these efforts have been, climbing to 92.9% in 2023 and 94.3% in 2024.
But the initiatives go beyond planting trees. DEWA has also taken significant steps in removing plastic waste from the beach, clearing out 3,546 kilograms of rubbish and eight tonnes of algae. These efforts not only beautify the environment but also protect marine life, showing a comprehensive approach to conservation.
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, emphasizes the agency’s dedication to societal responsibility. He mentions their commitment to the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 — a roadmap for global prosperity. The goal to plant 100 million mangrove trees in the UAE by the year 2030 is ambitious but essential for climate action, biodiversity, and preserving habitats.
Incorporating native species like mangroves is particularly crucial, as they can absorb carbon at a rate four times greater than tropical forests. This not only helps combat climate change but also enhances the overall biodiversity of the region.
